Welcome to Burney Friends and Neighbors
2025 was a very busy year for Burney Friends and Neighbors.
We finalized our organization as a 501(C) 2 non-profit.
We signed a use agreement with the North Central California Presbytery (NCCP) for the use of the building. The terms of the agreement are that we will pay the utilities and upkeep on the building. In addition the Use Agreement commences on April 1, 2025, and ends on the date when the donation of the Burney Presbyterian Church property to BFN is finalized.
Due to some very successful fund raisers, grants, memberships, and the generosity of the community Burney Friends and Neighbors was able to pay for our County use permit application, engineer report, insurance, fire extinguisher service and other expenses. At this point we have balance of $4300.00 available for expenses.
Current status.
Burney Friends and Neighbors is awaiting the final engineer report so we can complete our use permit application. At that point we will begin upgrades to the buildings. Once we have the use permit approved we will be able to begin to utilize the property.
The North Central California Presbytery is still working on clearing the title so the property can be transferred to Burney Friends and Neighbors.
Memberships have been extended to March 31st. This means that dues for 2027 will be due by April 1st and not during the busy holiday season.
We are continuing to accept aluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles with CRV values. There is a bin between the two buildings of the Burney Presbyterian Church property where cans and bottles can be dropped off.
We are planning on participating in the city-wide yard sale again this year. Collection will begin in May.
We will also be planning other fund raisers throughout the year. If you would like to help please come to our next meeting Wed Jan 21st at 7:00 at the church or contact us at burneyfn@gmail.com.

Our engineer is continuing to draw up the plans for the building. The upgrades identified so far are to the restrooms in the classroom building. The restrooms will become unisex and the current men's room will be enlarged to meet ADA requirements.
Plans are also to build a raised walkway that joins the two buildings with a ramp up to the walkway.

Our Initiatives
Burney Clean Streets Project
The Burney Clean Streets Project is funded by a generous grant from the Burney Regional Community Fund of the Community Foundation of the North State. We also are grateful for the support of Burney Les Schwab Tire Center.
We also invite additional businesses and residents to co-sponsor this project. Businesses that support us will have their name and logo on our website, social media, print flyers and anti-litter posters. Residents that would like to see their neighborhood cleaned up can sponsor an individual event.
You can help in the effort to clean up our town by joining one of the monthly events, or donating supplies that will aid our work.
-
Five gallon (or similar) buckets.
-
Work gloves, especially smaller sizes.
-
If you live in a neighborhood that we’re cleaning up and have extra room in your trash cans, we’d love to have drop off points to save hauling time and costs.

The Burney Clean Streets Project (BCSP) is a program of Burney Friends and Neighbors. This initiative will launch litter pick-up events about once a month to directly address the unsightly and environmentally concerning litter problem that currently affects our town. By actively engaging residents, and particularly our youth, BCSP aims to transform the visual appeal of Burney, fostering a greater sense of pride and ownership in our shared spaces. This collective effort will not only beautify our neighborhoods and commercial areas, but it will also play a crucial role in safeguarding the pristine waters of Burney Creek. This vital waterway, flowing directly through our town, is the source of surface water flow to the breathtaking Burney Falls at MacArthur Burney State Park, a mere ten miles downstream, making its health intrinsically linked to our local environment and tourism. Beyond the immediate aesthetic improvements, BCSP holds significant ecological advantages. By diligently removing litter, we will prevent harmful pollutants and plastics from entering Burney Creek, thus protecting the delicate aquatic ecosystem and preserving the natural beauty that draws countless visitors to our region. Water from Burney Creek flows into the Pit River, then the Sacramento River, and finally the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. We will not only improve the health of our local creek, but also over 200 miles of rivers downstream. This proactive approach to environmental stewardship underscores our commitment to maintaining the integrity of a natural resource that is both a local treasure and a significant economic driver through tourism. Furthermore, the project's focus on engaging children in these clean-up efforts offers an invaluable opportunity for environmental education. By participating in BCSP, our youth will develop a deeper understanding of the impact of litter, fostering responsible habits and a lifelong commitment to environmental preservation. In addition, we will be sponsoring an anti-litter poster contest for local youth to enter original artwork. We will have categories for Elementary, Junior and High School age participants. Posters will be judged, prizes awarded, and winning posters will be printed and distributed around town. The positive impacts of the Burney Clean Streets Project will extend beyond environmental benefits, contributing to our local economy and community spirit. The visible improvement in the cleanliness and appearance of our town, especially along our main street corridor burdened by vacant and unmaintained commercial properties, will create a more welcoming and inviting atmosphere for both residents and the many tourists who visit throughout the seasons. A cleaner, more attractive town can enhance the overall visitor experience, potentially encouraging longer stays and increased spending at local businesses. Moreover, a revitalized appearance can also make Burney a more appealing prospect for potential new businesses, helping to fill those vacant storefronts and stimulate economic growth. Our commitment to a cleaner Burney is further solidified through our participation in CalTrans' "Adopt-A-Highway" (AAH) program, with four BCSP events dedicated to cleaning our adopted stretch of Main Street/Highway 299E. Throughout the year, BCSP will rotate our neighborhood clean ups in the community, ensuring a comprehensive and widespread impact. This consistent and inclusive approach will not only address the immediate litter issue but also cultivate a stronger sense of community collaboration and civic responsibility. By working together, residents of Burney can take tangible steps to enhance our town's beauty, protect its natural resources, and create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for all.
